Nice little park to honor those who passed on these hallow grounds and keep it's history alive. Kept mostly in a natural state so don't expect playgrounds, pavement or other amenities. It is simply what the title implies ... A Battlefield. There are a few unkept Picnic areas but that's about it .
A must visit for anyone interested in American Revolution period history. The battlefield is much as it was 240 years ago. There are signs indicating where specific incidents happened during the battle and a small visitors centre and book shop. A very knowledgeable ranger/guide gave a great talk about the events leading up to and during the battle as well as the after affects.
This Battlefield, much like Fort Stanwix, was near vital importance to the ability of the American forces to win at Saratoga. Without the British, who were laying siege to Fort Stanwix, leaving from there [Fort Stanwix] to "assist" the forces there, Fort Stanwix would have fallen and the supply line to the American forces would have been cut. The men who fell here deserve this site in their memory and honor.
Historically significant. Very knowledgeable Park Services
Oriskany... "Where our fore-fathers fought and died..." It's an astounding place with an amazing, albeit bloody, history. Please note that opening hours are very unreilable! You might seek to be "worthy of your ancestral pride", only to be faced with a closed gate! In such a circumstance, I'd recommend just scaling the fence... or -- lol! -- just walking around it. Too much blood has been shed here in the past. You, as a descendant (perhaps in spirit!) of the Patriots, ought not to have to attend to silly bueraucratic opening-hour rules! The Revolutionary rebels ("traitors to the Crown!") certainly would NOT have!!! No, they prepared to fight to relieve the Crown's siege of Stanwix, and they prepared to die in the effort!!! If you get arrested, just ask the Judge what General Herkimer would have / should have done... And then go on with proper Patriot verbosity: "O RLY, y'er honor... This ain't Woodstock '99 gate crashing... Gentleman Johnny's Party Train ain't makin' it to this depot, no way, no how!!! I'm still holdin' the watch, y'er Honor! Nor is this wannabe Barry St. Ledger gonna make some sorta party train either!!! The Saint Ledger train is gonna end up being pushed back to become the new Maid o 'Mist tourist boat cruise, y'er Honor; I and my cohorts are intercepting it!!! ...And, with all due respect, y'er Honor, this is YOUR heritage as well as MINE! And there ain't no YOU (that's a 'u', peeps!) in 'honor' btw...." YMMV, but it did seem like a workable idea at the moment... and that's probably what the Patriots might have said had it gone the other way!! And, finally, please contact your Congressional rep 'cuz the lack of open accessibility is Total -- no, Royal -- B.S.!!!
